The highest-paying trades in Canada share a common thread: they're either specialized enough that supply is genuinely short, or they're essential to industries (oil and gas, mining, heavy industrial) that have historically paid above-market rates to attract workers to remote or demanding conditions.
All rates below are Alberta-weighted, which reflects where the highest wages are. National rates will typically run 10-20% lower. Shutdown and turnaround "peak" rates reflect intensive short-term work where overtime and shutdown premiums apply.

Instrumentation and Control Technician
Chronically understaffed. Every oil sands, refinery, and processing facility needs instrument techs but the trade is small relative to demand. PLC, DCS, and SCADA experience pushes rates to the top end.
Pipe Welder (B-Pressure / CWB)
B-pressure certification (CSA B51 standard) is required for pipelines, boilers, and pressure vessels. Demand far outstrips supply, especially in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Boilermaker
Heavy overlap with welding and pipefitting, but the boilermaker designation opens access to specific industrial work, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, boilers, where rates are highest.
Millwright / Industrial Mechanic
Oil sands facilities and potash mines in Saskatchewan run 24/7 and need millwrights constantly. Specialized knowledge of specific equipment (turbines, gearboxes, pumps) commands a premium.
Industrial Electrician
Industrial electricians with PLC experience earn significantly more than their construction counterparts. Motor controls, VFD troubleshooting, and plant maintenance are the high-value skills.
Crane Operator
Licensing is provincially regulated and limited. Tower crane and mobile crane operators on major construction projects and oil sands work are consistently well-paid.
Pipefitter / Steamfitter
Industrial pipefitting (as distinct from commercial HVAC pipefitting) commands strong rates on oil and gas facilities. Specialty systems like cryogenic or high-pressure steam add a premium.
Gas Fitter (Class A)
Class A gas fitter certification is required for commercial and industrial gas systems. The combination of plumbing or HVAC base + gasfitter ticket makes for a hard-to-replace skill set.
Heavy Equipment Operator
Haul truck drivers at oil sands mines and excavator operators on major civil projects earn comparable rates to most journeyman trades. FIFO premium applies heavily here.
Journeyman Electrician (Construction)
A large, well-compensated trade. Commercial and industrial construction electricians in Alberta consistently earn above the national median. Red Seal and industrial experience push toward the top of the range.
What these numbers actually mean
Hourly rates don't tell the full story. Two trades might both pay $55/hr, but one requires camp living away from family 14 days at a time, and the other is a 7:00-3:30 day shift five minutes from home. The total compensation picture, including per diem, camp accommodation, shift premiums, overtime, and benefits, matters as much as the base rate.
This is one of the reasons WrkCrew requires employers to disclose the full pay range, not just the headline hourly rate. Shift premiums, overtime structure, and per diem should be part of what you see before you apply, not something you find out in a phone screen.
How to move up the pay scale
- Stack your tickets. H2S Alive, Ground Disturbance II, Confined Space, and Aerial Work Platform are expected on industrial sites, not having them removes you from the highest-paying roles.
- Get your Red Seal. Interprovincial mobility and the signal it sends to industrial employers consistently opens higher-rate opportunities.
- Develop industrial-specific skills. PLC experience for electricians, pressure vessel work for welders, large rotating equipment for millwrights, these are the specializations that push you to the top of the range.
- Consider remote work. FIFO and camp work pays a significant premium over equivalent city work. If you can manage the schedule, it's the fastest path to higher earnings.
